Just One Taste (Pine Mountain #4.5) by Kimberly Kincaid

Book Blurb:

A little home improvement can go a long way…

Jesse Oliver was a medic in Afghanistan, but back home in Pine Mountain he’s happy to switch gears as the Double Shot bar’s new sous chef. When his apartment floods and his old Army buddy offers the family’s dilapidated lake house as temporary quarters, Jesse thinks a little remodeling on the creaky duplex sounds like a fair return favor. That’s before he sets eyes on the gorgeous woman moving into the other side of the cabin—and discovers she’s his buddy’s kid sister, a.k.a totally off limits.

Kat McMarrin has fought hard for her space, and she’s not too interested in sharing it. Of course, her job as a physical therapist means she won’t see much of Jesse, even if he’s a few thin floorboards away—unless she seeks him out. And with his sculpted body and slow-burn gaze, she might be tempted. Maybe the fixer-upper projects she has planned for the cabin will keep her mind off him. Or maybe her instincts to strip the place down will get out of hand…

My Review:

I loved being back in Pine Mountain in this stand alone novella about finding love unexpectedly.

I really liked the hero and the heroine.  They find themselves thrown together under unusual circumstances, and the attraction and chemistry between them is palpable.  Kat moved around a lot growing up sincer her father was in the military.  Her home and space mean everything to her...and she's not used to sharing it!  Jesse is former military who has found what he needs in Pine Creek when he returns to civilian life.  Unexpectedly they find each other and not only is the chemistry hot but they develop a great connection.  Jesse really struggles...not only is Kat his friend's sister, but he has never felt good enough for anyone...let alone someone like Kat.  Kimberly wrote both characters remarkably, but I really felt a lot for Jesse in particular.  I felt that I got to know him well in this novella.   She really made me care and want Jesse to realize he deserves all good things!  I really hoped he'd take the chance with Kat.

I really liked that Just One Taste didn't have any angst and it wasn't overly dramatic.  It's about two people finding their future, and holding each other up.

Gabe (Kat's brother) is a secondary character who we don't see a lot of, but is a strong factor anyway in Just One Taste, and I really liked his character too.  The maturity all of the characters show really stands out!

Although part of Kimberly's Pine Mountain series, Just One Taste can definitely be read as a stand alone.  I'd recommend Just One Taste to any romance reader looking for an emotional, strong novella.

4/5 stars
